CLASS T D-DAY

Owing to the many queries on why some people were left out of the T-shirt gathering and how the decision was made, I shall be writing a blog entry on this. This is the order of events that took place on Tuesday :

It started with Maths period in 6M. As it was freetime, Nigel held a “5K Council Meeting” to discuss the T-shirts and Ms Chan’s present. Just before Ms Yeo’s lesson ended, Nigel told all of us (6M ’09 5K ’08) pupils to meet after school for another council meeting.

After school, several 5Kians dashed off (although I did call out to some - like Lynn- to stay behind) and so, we were left with Nigel, Chin Ying, Nicole, Isabel, Yanzhe and me. However, as Nicole’s mother had arrived and Isabel had filming (plus she couldn’t part with soccer), the group ended up with just CY, YZ, Nigel and me.

After much discussion, I raised the idea of going to the T-shirt shop that day, as Nigel was lamenting how close it was to Ms Chan’s wedding day and we were never going to get the shirts done in time. The rest thought that that was a great idea, so all of us made quick phone calls to our parents then. When I called my mum, she said she was free to fetch us down to a T-shirt shop recommended by one of the teachers (it’s said that they can get our order done within a day).

While waiting for my mum to pick us up, we decided to go to the canteen for lunch. At the canteen, we saw Abby sitting with Nic Pua, eating chicken rice. As Nic was a 5kian, we asked her to join us, which she agreed as her training would only start at 4pm. We were at the gate when we met Klan. Klan was with Kane. However, as Klan did not want to leave Kane ‘cold and hungry’ (in his words), he declined joining us.

My mum then fetched us to the shop. At the shop, we looked at the stuff on display and caught sight of a black windbreaker. All of us liked the idea of a class windbreaker (which we can then wear to school) instead of a class tee being left in the cupboard (kind of wasteful!).

However, we found out that it was WAYYYYY too expensive, costing $30 (that’s crazy!). Thus, we had to go back to our OLDDD idea of a shirt. We considered Lynn’s design with all the different colours for each person’s name, but the shopkeeper said that would be very costly : more colours = more cost!!!

So, we decided to keep the design simple. We finally came to an agreement of 5K’08 on the front of the tshirt, and our names on the back. Well, Abby and I were browsing through the class tshirts of other schools on display and we found a slogan “None of us is as smart as ALL of us”. We thought that it was very meaningful (well, it really applies to us…), so we decided to slap it onto our class tee to make ours more interesting. To make the slogan stand out, we considered having it in gold (to differentiate it from our names in white) but the shopkeeper said the class tee will cost $4 more, YES! $4 MORE just to colour that slogan – so… we dropped the idea.

In the process of course we had a hard time deciding on the colour of the T-shirt – light blue, white & black all crossed our minds. Nigel wanted a tee with a Nike tick but all the girls said NO! Who wants to pay more for a small tick?

We finally settled for a t shirt in conventional black with 5K’08 in gold letters in front and our individual names in gold at the back (to personalise the tees). To keep the cost low, the rest of our class names and the slogan will be in simple white.

We did a rough sketch of the tee at the shop (the picture CY sent to all 5kians by email). By this time, Abby was pleading for us to leave … it was close to 4pm and she had to be back in school for track. So we decided that I will go home and choose the fonts and design the tee properly so that we can email it to the shop for printing.

As you can see, we did try to gather as many 5kians as possible that day, and we had no intention of leaving anyone out. And as this is OUR class tee – I thought all 5kians should have a say on the fonts they like – that’s why I started the vote…

So that’s how our class tee design came about...
